Chapter 1: Getting Started
Adjectives and Adverbs in Dholuo
Describe things in Dholuo with adjectives and adverbs like ber, rach and mit, and learn how the ma- particle works (ot maduong’).
📚 Theory: Introduction to Adjectives and Adverbs
Adjectives are words that describe nouns: beautiful or good (ber), tall (bor), sweet or tasty (mit), sad (sin). Adverbs are words that describe verbs: quickly (piyo), slowly (mos). In Dholuo, adjectives and adverbs can often be used interchangeably. Thus ‘ber’ means both ‘good’ and ‘well’ and ‘piyo’ means both ‘fast’ and ‘quickly’.
| Dholuo | English | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rach | Bad | Adjectives may take the particle ‘ma’ before the word they describe. The particle ‘ma’ can be translated as ‘which is’, so ‘Chiemo marach’ means ‘food which is bad’. |
| Ber | Good | Example in sentence: ‘Chiemo maber’ which means ‘food which is good’. |
| Ng’eny | A lot | |
| Tin | A little | Can also mean ‘small’ |
| Duong’ | Big | |
| Liet | Hot | Example in sentence: ‘Chai maliet’ which means ‘tea which is hot’. |
| Ng’ich | Cold | Example in sentence: ‘Chai mang’ich’ which means ‘tea which is cold’. |
| Piyo | Fast | |
| Mos | Slow |
📚 Theory: The particle -ma
In Dholuo, adjectives are formed using the prefix ma-, and they come after the noun. You can think of ma- as meaning: “that is” or “which is”. So instead of saying “a good boy,” Dholuo literally says: “a boy that is good.”.
| Dholuo | English |
|---|---|
| Chiemo marach | Food that is bad (i.e bad food) |
| Ot maduong’ | A house that is big (i.e a big house) |
